While many of us are waking up this morning, trying to figure out what time it is, the family of a Rockford police officer is waking up to tragic news; wondering what possibly could've went wrong during a routine traffic stop.

According to WREX, 30-year-old Jaimie Cox made a traffic stop around 1 o'clock this morning near State Street and Dawn Avenue. Shortly after, Cox called for back up.

When back up arrived, the officers came upon a single-vehicle car crash about two blocks away from the initial traffic stop; they also found Cox critically injured and a dead person inside the vehicle.

Cox was taken to a local hospital where he later died, but information on how he was injured has not been released. The identity of the deceased person in the car has also not been released.

Officer Cox had only been with the department for a little over a year.

There has already been a huge outpouring of support on social media this morning, with friends, family and citizens sending their thoughts and prayers to Officer Jaimie Cox's family.

Rest in Peace Officer Cox; and thank you for your service.
