Pro-Life. Pro-Choice. This is inarguably one of the most controversial topics in our country. Abortion was legalized in 1973 via Roe v. Wade.

Governor Rauner agreed on Thursday to sign legislation that would provide state health insurance and Medicaid coverage for abortions according to wifr.com.

Previously, Rauner had been opposed to this idea and thought our state should focus more on getting out of economic crisis. Currently, Illinois Medicaid only covers abortions that are medically necessary or the product of sexual assault. Rauner has gotten criticism from fellow Republicans but defends his decision stating,

I believe that a woman living with limited financial means should not be put in the position where she has to choose something different than a woman of higher income would be able to choose.

Illinois will be the sixteenth state to allow Medicaid to cover abortions. When the law goes in to effect, it could mean up to an additional 12,000 abortion a year in Illinois.

What are your thoughts on Rauner's decision?
