It's the lights on Broadway in NYC that made Rockford-native Marin Mazzie a star. It will be a fitting way for all of us to say goodbye.

Marin Mazzie, who was born in Rockford in 1960 and attended Boylan High School, died on September 13 of ovarian cancer at the age of 57. On Friday, September 21, all of the lights, on every marquee on Broadway, will dim for one minute starting at 6:45 p.m., according to wrex.com

The light dimming tribute dates back to the 1950s and it wasn't done very often. it's much more common these days, but only if the Broadway League approves. The league is made up of theater owners and producers and they determine if the one-minute tribute happens at curtain time on a show night, according to the nytimes.com. Only six theaters were going to participate in the tribute to Marin Mazzie, but a backlash on social media changed that, and now all broadway theaters will participate in the tribute.
