Would you like to know if your significant other is the one? Take them to Ikea.

Seems like a good idea in theory, but if you want your relationship to last, maybe don't.

In all seriousness though, I can see how this would be a good test. I'm personally not going to try it because I can't even manage a trip to Ikea by myself without bread crumbs and anti-anxiety medication.  This is why every piece of furniture in my house that's from Ikea was purchased on Craigslist; already assembled.

If you are brave enough, though, and you really want to know if your relationship will last; then take a trip to Ikea and then try to assemble a piece of furniture together.  Psychologist, Dr Ramani Durvasula, says that Ikea, just like relationships, is all about expectations. You want your life and your relationship to look a certain way, so when you go to Ikea and see the room of your dreams and you find out you and your partner aren't on the same page, you're reminded of those times that maybe you weren't able to compromise or there was lack of communication; and sometimes you don't want to be reminded of that.

And that's just the trip to Ikea. Let's not forget assembling the furniture once you get it home. You basically need a Masters Degree from MIT to put that stuff together and you know it'll probably cause a blow up. Experts say it's because underlying issues bubble to the surface while you're attempting to put it all together. Yeah, like when your husband tries to use an Allen wrench and you're reminded of how he just doesn't have the skills to put anything together or fix anything and you finally give up and say, "just let me do it." If you want something done right, you just need to do it yourself.

Or, when it comes to Ikea furniture, just have someone in the store assemble it for you. They offer assembly services starting at $79 for in-store purchases. Just make sure you bring a vehicle big enough to fit it; I don't need you fighting over the fact that you can't get it home now.

Let's wrap this up, you get it, Ikea is bad for your relationship.

Here are two of my favorite scenes from The Wire involving the assembly of Ikea furniture; I bet you can relate.
