If you have a dog that you feed wet/canned food to, this is some scary stuff!

The J.M. Smucker Company has issued a voluntary withdrawal of various wet dog food products due to the fear that they may contain low levels of the euthanasia drug pentobarbital.

According to dogfoodadvisor.com, the brand names of wet dog food cans affected include:

  • Gravy Train
  • Kibbles 'N Bits
  • Skippy
  • Ol' Roy

A statement from Smuckers received by dogfoodadvisor.com does state that this action is a voluntary WITHDRAWAL, which is different from a recall, but they understand why pet owners may be panicking. A withdrawal means all stock of the affected brands will be removed from store warehouses and shelves so it is not available to customers. Smuckers' statement also says;

Veterinarians and animal nutrition specialists, as well as the FDA, have confirmed that extremely low levels of pentobarbital, like the levels reported to be in select shipments, do not pose a threat to pet safety.
