Heads up, parents; if you're doing some school shopping this week and crayons are on your child's supply list, you'll want to avoid buying them from the Dollar Tree.

According to Eyewitness News, of the six brands of crayons tested from from the discount retailer, asbestos was found in the Playskool brand.

Asbestos can lead to some very serious health conditions including mesothelioma and lung cancer.

I'm not sure you know this, but it's actually legal to have asbestos in crayons, but scientists say that it can still pose a health risk to your children.

There were some other findings too. Toxic chemicals were found in the following back-to-school items:

  • Lead in children's water bottles including the Hydro Pro Furry Friends water bottle and the GSI Outdoors children’s water bottle, once sold by L.L. Bean.
  • Phthalates in the Jot brand blue 3-ring binder, also sold at retailers like the Dollar Tree and Staples.
  • Benzene in Board Dudes brand markers sold on Amazon. Benzene is linked to leukemia and can disrupt several bodily functions including liver and kidney function.
