Dusty Jo is this week's Pet of the Week from Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary.

If you couldn't already tell, Dusty Jo is the sweetest. The minute I stepped up to his kennel, he looked into my eyes and you could tell that he was saying, "Hi! I've been waiting here for so long; are you here to take me home with you?"

Dusty Jo is one of two dogs who have been at Noah's Ark the longest. The turn around for most dogs is a few days; usually no longer than a week, but some of the older dogs end up waiting a little bit longer. It's understandable why most families want to adopt younger dogs and puppies, but there are several benefits to adopting an older dog.

1. They're easier to train- they're calmer than the youngsters and with all of their experience, they're much better at reading their humans.

2. Older dogs are super loving- Most dogs adopted in their golden years are the most devoted and grateful.

3. They don't require the 24-7 monitoring that puppies do.

4. They settle more quickly- they've already been around the block and know what it takes to become part of your family in no time.

5. You won't bite off more than you can chew- One thing I hear too often from the staff at the Ark is that people adopt younger dogs without knowing how much responsibility they are and end up giving them up because it's too much work.  Older dogs are less of a commitment.

6. They enjoy the easy life- you won't be run ragged by the constant chase and no need to run marathons. Many older dogs don't require a lot of exercise and they love cuddling on the couch.

7. Be a hero- older dogs are usually the last to get adopted; saving an older dogs life will offer you an unparalleled emotional return on your investment.

8. They're so dang cute.
