Few things in life are certain: Death, taxes, and Disney’s live-action remakes of animated classics. One of the studio’s many, many, many upcoming live-action projects has graduated from concept to reality (or something close to it) as Disney has officially set a release date for Mulan, giving you ample time to clear your calendar for the first weekend of November…in 2018.

THR reveals that Disney has announced plans to release their live-action remake of Mulan on November 2, 2018, which means you now have an excuse to avoid any potentially bothersome family / personal / work commitments because you already have plans that weekend, clearly.

A director has yet to sign on for the film, though Disney is reportedly starting a “global casting search” for a Chinese actress to play the title role. We shouldn’t have to think of that as major news or some astonishing concept, but given the ongoing white-washing problem in Hollywood (see also: Doctor Strange, Ghost in the Shell), you can understand why Disney felt the need to make their casting intentions clear up front.

The live-action Mulan is based on Disney’s 1998 animated musical film (in turn based on the legend of Hua Mulan) about a young woman whose ailing father is danger of being drafted into the Imperial Army, so she disguises herself as a man and takes his place. Standing in defiance of patriarchal conventions, Mulan goes on to become one of China’s greatest warrior heroes.

It’s a story with enduring relevance, and one that could benefit greatly from a live-action retelling. Disney has tapped Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Jurassic World, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) to rewrite the original spec script, with the hopes of delivering “a more nuanced and elaborate adaptation” that will combine the original Chinese ballad with the studio’s classic animated film.

Disney’s next live-action remake is Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters on March 17, 2017. The studio is also developing a live-action Dumbo with Tim Burton, sequels to Maleficent and The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid with music from Lin-Manuel Miranda and original composer Alan Menken, and The Lion King with Jon Favreau — to name a few.
