Over its 12-year history, the dome, or as it's affectionately called, "The Bubble," has endured more severe storms and stronger winds. A few years ago someone cut a few holes in it's base and it partially collapsed. The dome is held up by air pressure and any variance in that pressure can cause a collapse.

The investigation into what happened this time can't even begin until daylight, but early speculation is that the heavy sleet and snow that fell today caused the collapse. According to a press release from the school district, the collapse was reported just before 4:45 p.m. Nobody appeared to be inside.

The district says it is working with air structure professionals and insurance adjusters to assess the damage.

The school district also is currently working to find alternate locations for physical education classes and athletic events that are typically help under the dome.
