Growing up in the Land of 10,000 lakes, one of my favorite things to do is be in and on the water. Especially in the summer time. What is it about being near water that just makes life more enjoyable? Have you ever noticed that? The sounds, the smells, the relaxed feeling that comes from just floating; it's what can turn a blah day into a day you wished could never end.

That's what summer days should be like; and while spending a day in the park or taking a walk along side the river is a really nice way to spend the day, it's much better being on the water. How many times have you been walking on the bike path or across the Jefferson Street bridge and watched the boats and jet skis go by? That should be you.

Here are some of the best ways, inspired by Thrillist, to get on and enjoy the Rock River this summer.

Have a drink with friends

If you don't have a boat or a friend with a boat, the next best thing is to be patio side. Grab your friends and have some ice cold beers at Tad's on the Rock or Prairie Street Brew House. This could be a great way to make friends with people who have boats. Is that shameful?

See the Ski Broncs

Anyone who was born and raised here knows that the Ski Broncs show is a must-see/must-do summer activity. Take the entire family to Shorewood Park to see the most passionate group of water skiers perform; some of these team members have family members that were part of the team for decades.  They perform FREE shows every Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend and ending on Labor Day.

Take the family to Shorewood Park

When the Ski Broncs aren't performing, Shorewood Park on the Rock River is a great place to take the entire family; it's the perfect spot for birthday parties, picnics and family gatherings. You can swim, relax and watch the sunset behind the Rockford Country Club.

Dock the boat at the Rock River sand bar in Beloit

You can pretty much party anywhere on the Rock River as long as there's a beach or sand bar; but the most popular spot (that I've heard about) is the sand bar in Beloit. Drop anchor, tie your boat to someone elses and just float and drink the day away.

Kayak, Canoe or SUP

All three of these activities are on my bucket list this summer; for those of you who don't know, SUP is: stand up paddle boarding. Rocktown Adventures in Rockford not only has equipment that you can rent, but they offer lessons, too. For full class descriptions, including any pre-class prerequisites, click here.

Cruise the river on the Forest City Queen or the Maxon Riverboat

This is one of my favorite activities of the summer. Riverboats are the perfect way to relax, take in the scenery, do some sight seeing and learn about the city's history. Whether it's the Forest City Queen or the Maxon Riverboat, you'll be cruising in style and perhaps enjoying a few cocktails or a nice meal.

Boat, float, fish and jet ski

Just want to throw in the obvious. Most of us who get on the water are in a boat, floating, fishing and watching the jet skiers go by.
