People who live out of the Midwest have a different name for our beloved Long John donuts.

A Long John is perfect when you want more than a regular-sized donut. Sometimes, they’re loaded with custard; sometimes, they’re not. Some Long Johns are chocolate, and some are maple. Sometimes, they’re covered with sprinkles; sometimes, they aren't.

One thing is sure: Long John’s are a donut delicacy specific to the Midwest.

WHERE DID LONG JOHN DONUTS GET THEIR NAME?

We have yet to determine where the term for that type of donut came from. Even Wikipedia doesn’t explain why it’s called a Long John.

On the Pacific coast of the United States and in British Columbia, Long John’s are called “bars,” but in the south, they are called something entirely different.

While vacationing in Florida, I stopped at the grocery store. Knowing my kids liked Long John donuts, I figured I’d scoop a few up.

WHERE ARE LONG JOHN DONUTS IN FLORIDA?

I couldn’t find Long John’s in the bakery aisle or at the counter, so I asked for assistance.

When I asked, “Hey, do you have any Long John’s?” I was given the most quizzical look. Long John’s aren’t a “thing” in Florida, and I was stunned. So I guess Long John donuts don’t have a name in Florida because, well, they don’t have any there.

It’s cool, though. I told that one employee all about Long John’s to get them up to speed. I’m sure they immediately got to work whipping up a batch of Florida Long John’s.
