Who's ready for a road trip? When it comes to summer travel, the best thing about living in Rockford is that you're close to some great cities like Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago; making weekend getaways and week long vacations close and inexpensive.

But maybe the hustle and bustle of the city isn't your speed. Your idea of a getaway is waking up to homemade meals at a charming bed and breakfast, antiquing, sipping on wine with friends and unwinding with family.

Whether it's in the winter and you visit for the amazing Night of the Luminaria or in the summer for their balloon race, Galena, Illinois is where you need to be.

In light of National Travel and Tourism Week, the Illinois Office of Tourism says that Galena is the second largest tourist destination outside of Chicago. With a population of 2,200 year-round residents, this town filled with historic charm and beauty gets 1.5 million visitors a year.

Which leads me to this question, I wonder if any of them decide to stay? When I went to Galena this past winter for the Night of the Luminaria, I didn't want to leave. Over dinner at the DeSoto House Hotel, my boyfriend and I started looking at properties for rent.

It's fun to think about, but even more fun to plan our next visit.
