A Rockford man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in the 1800 block of 16th Avenue. Officials say the man was shot after he fired on police from his front porch.

The incident currently is under investigation by the Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force.  According to our partners at Eyewitness News:

It started as a call at 4:24pm from a woman at 1806 16th Ave.  She told dispatchers her husband had taken all of his clothes off, picked up a rifle and went into the backyard.

When officers arrived, they could hear gunshots and saw the man go back into the home, where they heard more gunshots.  Officers set up a perimeter, and then saw the man come out onto the front porch.  That is when police say he fired at officers and they returned fire, killing him.  No one else was hurt.

The Winnebago County Coroner's office has identified the deceased as a 41-year-old Rockford man. An autopsy is pending on Monday, May 18. Toxicology tests will be available in approximately two weeks.
