If you're lying in bed all cozy and warm tonight only to be rudely awaken by a loud popping or cracking sound, don't panic and call 911 to report gun shots, it's likely just a "frost quake".

According to Wikepedia, a frost quake, which is scientifically known as a "cryoseism", is a:

seismic event that may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice.[5] As water drains into the ground, it may eventually freeze and expand under colder temperatures, putting stress on its surroundings. This stress builds up until relieved explosively in the form of a cryoseism.

Since the Stateline is experiencing Spring and Winter today thanks to Mother Nature's warped sense of humor, there's a good chance we'll be hearing a lot of cryoseisms as temperatures plummet throughout the evening.

The drastic change in temps will most likely effect the concrete foundations, decks, porches, etc, but in most cases won't cause serious damage to your home, they just sound super scary.
