A Rockford mom discovered her son's cancer, thanks to a photo she captured with her cell phone.

Julie Fitzgerald's son, Avery, is just like any other two year old;  who loves to laugh and play and do things with his older brother; but Fitzgerald noticed something different about him a couple of months ago.

She started noticing that she would take photos that one of his eyes had a special twinkle; kind of like a white glare. That's when mother's intuition kicked in and Fitzgerald did some research online.  She came across an article about a woman who saw a white eye in photos of relatives instead of the normal red eye and it turned out to be cancer.

Fitgerald told her husband about the article but he told her it was probably nothing, but she just couldn't get over what she read in the article and she finally decided to take Avery to a specialist where they discovered that he had retinoblastoma. Doctors believe he may have been blind in that eye since birth and since 75% of it was covered in tumors, it had to be removed ; saving Avery's life.

Doctors said if it was discovered any later, the outcome may not have been the same. They were fortunate enough to catch the cancer before it spread to Avery's brain.

I am so happy to hear that this story has a happy ending. It's hard to imagine any parent having to experience something like this. In fact, parents can all learn an important lesson from this and for others it could just be a reminder - mother's intuition is the real deal. If you feel something in your gut, go with it; it could be a matter of life or death.
