Snow is expected to fall this weekend, and while nobody is sure how much, you can be certain you're going to need to get it off your sidewalks.

That's because a Rockford city ordinance says so. According to Sec. 26.10.

The owner or occupier of each lot or part of lot, improved or unimproved, to which the general public is invited, shall remove all snow and ice which may have fallen or accumulated upon the sidewalk in front of the premises which he or she owns or occupies not later than 12:00 noon of the day after the same has ceased to fall or accumulate."

Rockford Ordinance Says You May Face Fines For Not Shoveling By This Time

Meaning if you own a home or business you best make sure you're outside cleaning your sidewalks before it gets too late.

Because "Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be subject to a fine each day any violation of this section continues shall constitute a separate offense."

How much could you get fined for not removing snow from your sidewalks? Well, according to some uploaded Public Works files on the city of Rockford website:

Any person violating...shall be subject to a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars not more than five hundred dollars. for a first offense and not less than fifty dollars nor more than five hundred dollars for any subsequent offense. Each day any violation of this section continues shall constitute a separate offense."

It looks like first "un-shoveled sidewalk" offense will get you a $25 fine, followed by $50 all the way up to $500.

I always thought shoveling snow was just part of the "good neighbor pact." Turns out, if you don't remove your snow in Rockford, you're breaking the law.

Have you or anyone you know been fined because they didn't shovel their sidewalk?
