The Rockford Police Department recently participated in the Illinois Department of Transportation's Independence initiative to determine impaired drivers and those violating seat belt laws.

The program was funded through IDOT's division of traffic safety.

Rockford Police recently announced the results of the campaign, which was conducted during three different sessions.

The department joined the Illinois State Police during a roadside safety checkpoint June 14. The effort netted one DUI, 13 driver's licenses charges, six safety belt violations and 14 alcohol and drug offenses. There also were two warrants served and seven warnings issued June 14.

Additional DUI patrols were conducted June 27 and July 5. Those patrols resulted in five DUIs, one child restraint violation, three warrants served, one driver without a valid license, two charges for minors drinking, a fireworks violation and 12 citations for other moving and equipment violations.
