What does it take to remove the 'gooseance' from all of Rockford's parks? Yes, that's my word for the nuisance that the goose population has become in our parks.

For 11 years he's protected our parks by chasing the geese away and now he wishes to spend his days relaxing. Jet, a 15-year-old border collie is retiring from the chase, according to wifr.com in the video below.

I've had geese shout at me, they've chased me and the worst of all, I've stepped on a lot of goose poop thinking it was the plugs left behind after grass has been aerated.

We need to find Jet's replacement quickly. The Rockford Park District is looking for a new goose herder and new volunteers. If you love being active, outdoors and spending time in Rockford's many beautiful parks, you're exactly the kind of person needed for this job.

As we're entering the Fall season, goose management gets a little tougher with all the migratory visitors. As a volunteer, you'll get to set your own hours. To volunteer, go to www.rockfordparkdistrict.org or contact Jan Davis at 815-987-8847 or email volunteer@rockfordparkdistrict.org.
