I'll admit it, I'm not a fan of youth sports. I think they put kids in situations where lines get drawn way too early in life.

That being said, my kids (at least my oldest) wants to play sports. So I support him while he's involved but I wanted to stay out of them as a parent.

My parental involvement when it comes to sports is to help them practice and get them to their games.

That's the extent of my Dad-ness when it comes to sports.

I saw parents this past fall swearing and visibly upset during my son's last game of the football season. His team lost. He plays in a football league with other nine and ten-year-olds.

As I watched in amazement I realized that all of these hot headed parents had the wrong idea. It's not about them, it's about their kids.

Thankfully, I stumbled upon this story someone had posted on Facebook mentioning the six words parents need to say to their kids about sports.

The six words?

"I love to watch you play."

That's pretty powerful stuff. If you think about it, that could be the difference between your kids enjoyment in sports or any kind of performance.

So next time, before you get upset at your kid for his or his teams performance, remember it's not about you, it's about them.
