Parents Praising Rockford Teacher’s Lesson on Diversity and Uniqueness

A Rockford 1st-grade teacher has created a 'community' of love in her classroom with a fun and creative lesson celebrating each child's individuality.

While these children are celebrating their unique stories, the children are also seeing and talking about the things that make them the same.

One Nation One People, Peace

I've said those words every weekday morning at the close of my show for more than 30 years and this classroom is the embodiment of that expression.

CONGRATULATIONS to Susanna Finley from Rockford Lutheran Academy in Rockford, IL.

Sarah Meyers nominated Susanna, she writes:

The school year has just begun and my child is already learning about becoming a part of a community. Miss Finley took the time to teach a lesson on diversity and uniqueness. Though this may seem like a simple thing, she’s taught her students to embrace themselves and to celebrate their individual uniqueness. Students were asked to draw self-portraits, and to find a crayon that matches their individual and special skin tones (which they get to keep for the year).

 

 

 

The pictures that the students created were amazing, they not only captured each student’s individual personality, but also celebrated their differences at the same time. Miss Finley goes above and beyond to make sure each student feels welcomed and loved in her classroom environment.
