There's a lot that goes into throwing a surprise party, but one specific detail can ruin the whole thing.

Over the weekend, a memory popped up in my Timehop from five years ago when my friends threw me a surprise going away party.

I was a few weeks away from moving to California, and I had dinner plans with Amy and Elizabeth. I remember getting ready to go to dinner and being super hungry. We were planning on going to an Italian restaurant by Amy's parents' house, so we were meeting there.

One other distinct memory I had was deciding what to wear. Most of my clothes were packed and I was thinking about just wearing whatever I could find when Elizabeth texted me saying, "I think I'm gonna wear a dress, you should wear a dress."

That should have tipped me off, but I didn't even think twice about what she said, I just put on the dress and waited for her to pick me up for the dinner, which ended up being a surprise party for me, at Amy's parents' house.

While I was super surprised and excited that my friends and family were all there to celebrate me, I remember being starving the whole night. The snack and appetizers couldn't cut it.

Which brings me to that most important flaw about surprise parties, deciding what you're going to use to "lie" to the person who's being surprised. More often than not, the throwers end up worrying about the party more than the "lie."

My friends did a great job surprising me, but if we would've just said we were going for drinks instead of dinner, I wouldn't have been starving.

On the other hand, I was super glad I wasn't dressed like a hobo in capri yoga pants and a workout tank top!

I've heard of plenty surprise parties gone bad when the guest of honor was so incorrectly dressed for the party that the whole thing was ruined.
