Why are there hundreds of repeat OWI offenders back on the road in Wisconsin?

If you've ever asked yourself that question, you're not alone. Or maybe you're like me and you had no idea that there were so many. I've lived in Wisconsin for two and a half years and it wasn't until today that I was aware of the shocking differences between Illinois and Wisconsin state laws when it comes to drunk driving.

My Stateline revealed some pretty shocking information and if you're a parent of a teenage driver like me, please familiarize yourself with the state's take on how they handle repeat OWI offenders. The difference in how each state handles this problem can be deadly.

The state of Wisconsin allows repeat offenders back into the driver's seat just days after they're arrested. In fact, the first time their caught for drinking and driving, it's just a traffic violation. It's not until the fourth time that it becomes a felony, and even if they go to prison, Wisconsin can only take your license away for a maximum of three years.

Compare that to Illinois, where drivers lose their license after their first offense. How does any of that make sense? Illinois lawmakers say that cracking down early is extremely effective.

So why is Wisconsin one of the most lenient states when it comes down to cracking down on repeat drunk drivers? Take one guess - culture. Basically because Wisconsin is known for drinking, so somehow that makes it ok.

There are a lot of jokes that could be made here. I'm sure you might be thinking that if you want to be stupid and drink and drive that you'll just pop over to the 'Sconi side of the border where you won't get in trouble, but remember, people's children, like mine, are driving on the roads. While you might walk away with a minor traffic violation, my child - or yours won't.
