If you were wondering why The Weeknd chopped off his dreads just before his newest Starboy-era, he insists it was more a matter of substance than style.

In a new interview with The Wall Street Journalthe "Can't Feel My Face" singer (real name Abél Makonnen Tesfaye) said the drastic hair makeover boiled down a couple of basic hassles that bothered him nightly:

"I could only sleep on one side of my face."

Noted.

"Now, the sleep is amazing," he continued. "The shower is amazing, because I don’t have to spend two hours cleaning it. I didn’t know how much I wanted it until I did it."

Still, The Weeknd admitted it was a struggle to get those close to him to come around on the idea of making the drastic cut. He said most tried to dissuade him from any type of transformation.

"It was a long time coming,” he said. “It didn’t feel right anymore…I told everybody I was getting rid of it, and everybody — literally, unanimously — they were like, ‘No, don’t do it! That’s your whole thing, that’s you.’ And the way they said that, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m definitely cutting it now."
