It's Monday, so there's a pretty good chance that when you woke up this morning you were wondering where the weekend went and you wished it could last a little bit longer. That couldn't have just been me; but it turns out that we're pretty fortunate to have Saturday and Sunday in the first place.

Weekends weren't always two days long and surprisingly, if it wasn't for the hangover, we may still be stuck at one. Yep, you read that right, drunk people are essentially the reason we have two days for shenanigans and sleeping in.

According to Mental Floss, who cited an article from the Science of Us,  the weekend started out as one day a week, set aside for rest and worship; but things took a turn in the 19th century when workers in Britain spent the day partying like it was 1899 and would either come in to work hungover, or they would take the entire day off completely to recover.

It became such a common occurrence that through a little compromise and observance of the Jewish Sabbath, the weekend went from one day to a day and a half and eventually to two days; in fact, it became law of the land.

With that said, if we all came together and started calling in sick on Mondays or all took a half day then maybe we could turn the two day weekend into three. I mean, what do we have to lose? Someone once told me, "you never know until you try."
