Family members, friends and supporters of fallen Rockford Police Officer Jaimie Cox met with Rockford City Council members last night to discuss renaming the Morgan Street Bridge in honor of not only Officer Cox, but all of our city's police officers.

They are proposing renaming the bridge the Police Memorial Bridge, but Mayor McNamara is not on board with the idea...yet.

Here is what the Mayor had to say about the petition at last night's City Council meeting according to 23WIFR;

"I don't personally think it's appropriate to the life of Mr. Patterson or the life of Mr. Cox to have that discussion.”

Here's the thing, Mayor McNamara isn't completely shutting down the idea to rename the Morgan Street Bridge, he just wants to pause the conversation until the official death investigations of Officer Cox and Eddie Patterson are completed...a.k.a. a completely respectful and politically correct response.

Some people in the Rockford community feel renaming the bridge in honor of Officer Cox's death is "demonizing" Eddie Patterson, so they have started a change.org petition.

Maybe this is why the City of Rockford is pressing the pause button on the entire renaming the Morgan Street Bridge discussion?
