Wisconsin Passes New Drunk Driving Law
I remember the first time I "partied" in Illinois; someone joked with me that if I was going to drink and planned on driving that I should be sure to get caught on the Wisconsin side of the Stateline. I'm not one to drink and drive anyway but out of curiosity, I asked why. Apparently, Wisconsin is a little more lenient when it comes to drinking and driving, simply because it's sort of the Wisconsin way...or something like that. From what I hear, your first OWI offense in Wisconsin is usually dropped to a "Careless Driving" charge.
Well now, Wisconsin has decided to get a little tougher on repeat drunk drivers. On Monday, Governor Scott Walker signed a new law stating that a person's fourth OWI would be considered a felony and it would increase penalties for subsequent offenses. While the law isn't as tough as other states, Governor Walker is hoping that it sends a message.
The new law goes into effect this week.
How do you think this will impact the state of Wisconsin? Is waiting for the fourth offense waiting too long?
