Afternoon News Update: May 8
- An east side Rockford bank has been robbed. It happened late this morning at the US Bank in the 1000 block of East State Street. The suspect was last seen headed down South 7th Street on foot. He is described as a black male, wearing a baseball cap and gray shoes. We will have more on this situation as it develops.
- There was a stabbing on Rockford’s north side. It happened Wednesday night when a 45-year-old man was stabbed once in the chest in the 800 block of North Court Street. Police say the prime suspect in the case is his 60-year-old roommate, who has not yet been found. The victim’s injuries are considered to be serious as he remains in the hospital at this time.
- A DeKalb man has overturned his car and now faces multiple charges. On Wednesday 28-year-old Christopher Rangel was driving West on South Malta Road when he lost control of his car and went into a ditch, causing it to overturn. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He's been cited for driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured vehicle, and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
- A Rockford man has been arrested on drug charges after a routine traffic stop. Officials say 20-year-old Derrick Neville Jr. has been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis. It happened Wednesday on Route 64 near Five Points Road when he was pulled over for not dimming his headlights.
- Machesney Park is about to receive a big boost for its latest construction project. Governor Pat Quinn announced an investment of $5.8 million will go towards it. The money will help reconstruct the intersection of Route 2 and Roscoe Road. The project is part of Governor Quinn’s $31 billion Illinois Jobs now! program, which is the largest construction program in state history. It will also support more than 439,000 jobs over the next six years.
- At least 40,000 Illinois residents have received licenses to carry hidden guns since the state's concealed carry law took effect in January. Illinois is the last state in the nation to allow the practice and officials have said they expect about 300,000 applications to be filed this year. People wanting licenses must get 16 hours of training first which isn’t easy as firearms instructors have been very busy.
