Per Edgar Wright, a ‘Baby Driver’ Sequel Might Continue Baby’s Driving
It wasn’t so long ago that Edgar Wright voiced some misgivings about the business of sequels, saying “I guess I would rather be telling new stories than revisiting old ones.” But in that very same interview, he emphasized that he has no hard-and-fast rules for how he chooses projects, and that if reviving an established property felt natural and creatively productive, he wouldn’t rule out the possibility. He batted around the idea of following up on cop-parody Hot Fuzz back then, and now today, he’s reignited fan murmurs of an entry into sequeldom with Baby Driver.
[BIG FAT SPOILER ALERT FOR ALL DINGUSES WHO HAVE NOT YET SEEN BABY DRIVER]
Wright’s latest concludes with our boy serving out a prison sentence as his beloved awaits his return, the assumption being that they’ll live happily ever after once he’s paid the proper penance for his sins. But Wright’s willing to entertain the notion that there may be more to it than that. The Playlist notes a new Empire interview with Wright in which the filmmaker states that he’s not entirely opposed to extending the saga of Baby. Wright affirms that the studio has already approached him about mounting a sequel to Baby Driver, and that this is one of the films he could see himself returning to. His quote:
Most sequels, you have to contrive something so they go back to square one, unless there’s somewhere deeper for them to go. I think with Baby Driver, there’s more that you can do in that realm, and I sort of have an idea that if you did another [film] you would subvert his involvement in the crime in a different way so he’s not the apprentice anymore.
The getaway grasshopper would become the criminal sensei, it seems, an intriguing prospect if nothing else. But there are approximately 158 more steps before this idea can become a reality, and something tells me Ansel Elgort’s schedule is about to get a whole lot tighter.
