DIY Mosquito Repellant Using Vodka And Household Products
When trying to protect yourself from mosquitoes use Tito's (actually any brand). Avoid the strong chemicals and try this blend of things you have around the house.
Many people don't like using DEET, which is the strong chemical used in many insect repellants. And given the fact that many also like vodka, this is a win-win. Right now the stateliness is under a full-on mosquito attack. So much rain and the return of 80-90 degree days have contributed to a major increase in the mosquito population.
Now you can use any brand of vodka you choose, but I prefer Tito's. Plus it makes for a much better slogan for your homemade spray, "Tito's for mosquitoes."
- 2 tablespoons of vodka
- 2 tablespoons of grape-seed oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, or neem oil (which contains natural insecticidal compounds)
Add the first two liquids to a 3oz. spray bottle first, then add the next ingredient
- 100-110 drops essential oils
Shake well before each use and apply every 3-4 hours. Enjoy the rest of your vodka outdoors, in a glass, without the mosquitoes.
Below is the most recommended blend of essential oils to repel mosquitoes and other annoying warm weather bugs.
- 55 drops lemon eucalyptus essential oil (reported by the CDC to be a good natural substitution for DEET in repelling insects, but not recommended for use on children under 3 yrs.)
- 15 drops cedarwood essential oil
- 15 drops lavender essential oil
- 15 drops rosemary essential oil
Other Bug-Repelling Essential Oils:
- citronella
- eucalyptus
- lemongrass
- tea tree
- peppermint
- cypress
- rose geranium
- bergamot
- lemon
