The History Of Illinois Sports

The state of Illinois has a long history of sports. From little children all the way up to the pro teams and everything in between. Of course, everyone knows the big names like the Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, and White Sox. There are many other lesser know organizations that have made the Land of Lincoln home.

I consider myself a pretty big Illinois sports fan and there are still new things I learn all the time. I recently found out that back in 1968, the Chicago White Sox played ten home games in Milwaukee. Also, this week I discover another interesting fact about the White Sox.

The Chicago Sports Museum Is A Great Place To Visit For Fans

This past weekend, my family and I made a trip to Chicago. One of our stops was at the Chicago Sports Museum inside Water Tower Place. If you are a fan, it is a must-see. They have some great stuff including interactive exhibits and amazing memorabilia. For more info, HERE.

While I was exploring the museum, I learned something else new about the Sox. They had a group of women called the Soxettes working for them back in the day.

Who Are The Soxettes?

When I saw a uniform from the Soxettes in a display case, I immediately wondered what they were all about. I had never heard of them before.

According to sabr.org, 

"The club hired 15 “Soxettes,” mini-skirted female hostesses who directed fans to their seats."

According to wgntv.com, 

"Made TV appearances, traveled with the team and went with the players on school visits to mingle with the kids."

 

"For 4 seasons, she, along with the other Soxettes,  were ever present at the games, in their mini skirt uniforms."

Apparently, they were one of the first female promotion teams in professional sports.
