If you have a teenager, you know it's pretty terrifying when they hit the road for the first time. Not only does their inexperience make you nervous, but we know that other drivers can be pretty reckless. While there are crazy drivers in every state, some states are better for teenage drivers than others. One of the Quad-City states is significantly better for teen drivers than the other and if you read the headline, it's obviously Illinois. But how much better is Illinois for teen drivers than Iowa?

Our friends at WalletHub released their list of 2022's Best & Worst States For Teen Drivers recently. In order to determine the best and worst states for teen drivers, WalletHub took at look the teen-driving environment in the 50 states using these three key dimensions:

  1. Safety
  2. Economic Environment
  3. Driving Laws

WalletHub then evaluated those dimensions using 23 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for teen drivers. After doing all of the math for each state, they determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score.

WalletHub used the resulting scores to rank each state from best to worst for teen drivers giving us 2022's Best & Worst States For Teen Drivers.

According to WalletHub, Illinois is the 3rd best state for teen drivers. Illinois had an overall score of 64.15. This is how Illinois ranked in those three key dimensions:

  1. Safety - 7th
  2. Economic Environment - 29th 
  3. Driving Laws - 6th

On the other side of the river, WalletHub found that Iowa is the 37th best state for teen drivers or the 13th worst state for teen drivers. Iowa's overall score was 48.24. This is how Iowa ranked in those three key dimensions:

  1. Safety - 30th
  2. Economic Environment - 22nd
  3. Driving Laws - 39th

The best state for teen drivers, according to WalletHub, is New York. The worst state is Montana.
