When those tax bills come in I don't know about you, but my heart sinks a bit. However, when I look at my taxes compared to Lake County, Illinois I don't feel as bad. Tax Rates put that county as the highest for property taxes in Illinois.
On average Lake County (which is located in the north of Chicago) collects $6,285.00 in taxes. WHAT? Compared to the median average of the state which is just over $3,500, Lake County has almost doubled that.
Lake County collects the highest property tax in Illinois, levying an average of $6,285.00(2.19% of median home value) yearly in property taxes.
With the highest, there has to be a low property tax county and there is. Hardin County collects on average $447. Known as Little Egypt, Hardin County is located in the southern part of the state close to the Kentucky border.
What about Adams County
On average, the taxes collected in Adams County are $1,580. I'll take that all day over the $6,000 in Lake County.
