Built in the 1920s by Walter Schroeder, the Hotel Retlaw (pronounced "ree-law") was once the crown jewel of Fond du Lac. With its luxurious ballroom, state-of-the-art elevators, and opulent guest rooms, the Retlaw was the place to be for the city's elite.

But with luxury comes tragedy, and the Hotel Retlaw has seen its fair share. In the 1940s, a man named Harold Gottfried jumped to his death from the hotel's ninth floor. In the 1960s, a woman named Mary Jane Mudd was found murdered in her guest room. And in the 1980s, a fire broke out in the hotel, claiming the lives of three guests.

But it's not just human tragedy that haunts the Hotel Retlaw. Many guests and staff have reported strange occurrences, from doors opening and closing on their own to the ghostly sound of music and laughter coming from the empty ballroom. One guest even claimed to see the ghost of Harold Gottfried wandering the ninth floor.
