Earlier this year, I overheard two coworkers talking about what a busy spring and summer they were about to have because of all the weddings they were planning on attending. One of them had 2 weddings a month from April through September.

Summer is generally looked at as being "wedding season," but knots are being tied at all times of the year, including holidays

From backyard ceremonies in small towns to black-tie events overlooking the Chicago skyline, one thing is consistent across the board: weddings are getting more expensive.

So let's take a look at some Illinois prices when it comes to how and where the nuptials take place.

Whether You're Paying For The Wedding Yourself, Or You're Getting Some Parental Help With Costs, Someone Had Better Have Some Money

Recent industry breakdowns put the average Illinois wedding at around $38,000 to $39,000 in 2026. That number is heavily shaped by the cost of a wedding in Chicago.

  • Illinois average: $38,000
  • Chicago average: $39,000-$43,000 depending on guest count and vendor package
  • Some Chicago-area weddings (especially ones with larger guest lists) can easily climb to $70,000-$80,000 or more

In other words, Chicago isn’t just the high end of Illinois, it's the reason Illinois averages look the way they do.

Outside the metro area, costs drop significantly. Central and downstate Illinois weddings can often land in the mid-$20,000s to low-$30,000s, depending on venue style and guest count.

Here's Where That Money Goes With Today's Weddings

Illinois is not unique when we talk about what wedding money is being spent on in 2026. This spending happens from coast-to-coast.

  • Venue and catering: 50-60% of the total budget
  • Photography and video: 15%
  • Florals and décor: 10-15%
  • Entertainment (DJ/band): 5%
  • Everything else (dress, cake, transport, invites): whatever may be left over from the expenses above.

The biggest driver by far is the guest count. Every extra table adds up quickly, with food, drinks, rentals, and space all pushing the costs up.

If You've Been Married For 25 Years Or Longer...

Think back to the year 2000. It was still expensive, but much less than today.

Back then, the average US wedding cost was roughly:

  • $20,000-$22,000 nationally
  • Illinois slightly above average due to Chicago demand at roughly $22,000-$25,000

Even adjusting for inflation, that would be about $38,000-$45,000 in today’s dollars

So in real terms, over the last 25 years, weddings have doubled in cash cost, and still increased somewhat even after inflation is considered, especially in larger urban areas.

So, to bottom-line it all for you, in 2026, a small wedding could cost you $20,000 to $30,000. The average wedding will run $38,000 to $40,000, and a large guest list wedding or Chicago wedding is more likely going to cost $45,000 to over $80,000.

LOOK: Do you see faces in these photos?

Pareidolia refers to the ability to see recognizable shapes, often faces, in random objects. Take a look at the photos below and see if you can identify any faces or shapes. Some are easy to spot, while others might be more challenging.
