Iconic Illinois Band That Defined Power Pop
Power pop is a genre that bridges the energy of rock with the irresistible charm of pop melodies, and one band that exemplifies this fusion is Shoes. Hailing from Zion, Illinois, Shoes emerged in the mid-1970s as a pioneering force in the DIY music movement. Their story is one of creative independence, musical craftsmanship, and enduring influence.
I remember New Year's Eve, 1982, Kiss at the then-named Metro Center ( BMO Harris Bank Center ) with the opening band, Shoes. I knew of them but was not very familiar with their music. Even though it was an odd pairing of Shoes with Kiss, I really enjoyed their power pop sound and over the years, picked up everything they recorded.
Origins of Shoes: From Basement Recordings to Cult Status
Shoes was formed by brothers John and Jeff Murphy, along with their friend Gary Klebe. In 1975, they recorded their first album, Un Dans Versailles, in their home studio using rudimentary equipment. This humble start exemplified their DIY ethos, a characteristic that would define their career. Their 1977 album, Black Vinyl Shoes, recorded on a four-track in their living room, gained critical acclaim and earned them a cult following.
Major Label Success and Artistic Independence
In 1979, Shoes signed with Elektra Records, releasing albums like Present Tense and Tongue Twister. These records showcased their knack for catchy melodies, tight harmonies, and jangly guitars, hallmarks of the power pop genre. Despite major-label backing, Shoes maintained their creative control, ensuring their music remained authentic to their vision.
When the major label era ended, Shoes returned to their independent roots. They established their label, Black Vinyl Records, reissuing their earlier works and continuing to release new music.
