Visitors to Illinois, welcome! We're glad you're here to experience all that our great state has to offer. But before you embark on your journey, we'd like to give you a little heads-up on some things that may unintentionally annoy locals.

There's More To Illinois Than Chicago

First and foremost, please do not ask us if Chicago is the capital of Illinois. We know it's not, and we're pretty sure you do too. Springfield is our capital, and it's a great city in its own right. But please don't tell us you're "just passing through" on your way to Chicago, we'll understand.

Fact: We Don't All Live On Farms

Another thing that grinds our gears is when visitors ask if we all live on farms. Sure, Illinois is known for its agriculture, but that doesn't mean we all live on farms. We have big cities, small towns, and everything in between. So please don't assume that we all have cows and pigs in our backyard.

Nobody Actually Verbally Uses The Phrase "Windy City"

If you're visiting Chicago, don't be surprised if locals don't call it "The Windy City." We call it "Chi-Town" or simply "Chicago." Windy City is a nickname that was given to the city in the late 1800s because of the politicians and their windy speeches. But you know what, let's just call it "The city of the Windy Politicians" instead.

Oh-no, Very Unlikely

Lastly, please don't ask us if we've ever met Oprah Winfrey. Of course, we haven't, she's Oprah Winfrey, and she's way too important to hang out with the likes of us. But we'll tell you what, you can come back and ask us again if you ever meet her and tell her hello from us.

Just remember to keep these things in mind, and you'll be sure to avoid any unintentional annoyance.
