Thousands of New Homes Coming to Rockford: Inside the City’s Housing Strategy
The City of Rockford is taking big steps to make neighborhoods more inclusive and give our town a thriving future with the rollout of a new Housing Strategy Framework.
A Vision for Growth and Opportunity
According to the press release, this plan was designed to create between 6,000 and 9,000 housing units by 2035, offering residents high-quality, diverse housing options, supporting economic growth, and strengthening communities.
A major part of this strategy focuses on making Rockford an attractive place for housing development.
Investing in Neighborhoods and New Development
The City of Rockford hopes to fuel investment by working closely with developers, streamlining approval processes, and offering financial incentives like tax rebates and fee reductions.

The strategy also focuses on revitalizing existing Rockford neighborhoods by updating vacant properties, supporting home rehabilitation programs, and adapting abandoned industrial sites for mixed-use development.
Educating the public about fair housing, housing affordability challenges, barriers, and potential solutions is another important strategy the City of Rockford will implement, along with increasing community engagement opportunities when conducting planning in neighborhoods.
Strengthening Community Partnerships
By working with the Rockford Housing Authority, local organizations, and financial institutions, the city is determined to expand affordable housing options and new pathways to homeownership for residents.

According to the press release, extra focus will be given to seniors and residents with disabilities to make sure they have access to housing near essential services.
How to Get Involved
Rockford residents and stakeholders are encouraged to learn more about the framework and share their input.
The next Community Relations Meeting will take place on Thursday, February 13, at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers. More details can be found by clicking HERE.
