Rockford Police attempted a traffic stop last night (Thursday 1/9) on the city's west side, but it turned into a dangerous chase through neighborhoods.

According to an RPD press release, SCOPE officers were conducting a traffic stop near School Street and Soper Avenue around 10:30 pm when the vehicle fled the scene, initiating a brief pursuit.

Suspect Located at Horsman Street Residence

Officers later located the vehicle at a residence in the 700 block of Horsman Street. With assistance from a Rockford Police K-9, officers found the driver, identified as 34-year-old Mathew Polanco, inside the residence.

While behind apprehended, the K-9 bit Polanco, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. After receiving medical attention, Polanco was transported to the Winnebago County Jail.

Charges and Community Safety

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and authorized multiple charges against Polanco. These include two counts of aggravated fleeing, outstanding warrants for aggravated weapon discharge, and false theft reporting.

According to the report, these charges are merely accusations, and Polanco is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
