Chicago Cubs Legend Ryne Sandberg Dies at 65

One of my favorite players growing up, Hall of Fame Second Baseman and Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg died at an all too young age of 65 on July 28, 2025.

Public Tribute Planned at Gallagher Way

The Cubs announced they are going to hold a public tribute for Ryno at Gallagher Way, located just outside of Wrigley Field, where fans can pay their respects. There's not one fan, past or present, who doesn't know the accomplishments Sandberg made for the team.

Event Details and How Fans Can Participate

While Sandberg's private funeral is scheduled for August 22, at Wrigley Field's Gallagher Way, by his statue, there will be a public memorial celebrating his life. The video board outside the ballpark will broadcast the funeral. In place of flowers, attendees of the memorial are asked to make non-perishable donations to Nourishing Hope and Most Blessed Trinity Food Pantry.

Funeral Plans and Possible Broadcast Information

BleedCubbieBlue speculates, "It seems possible Marquee Sports Network might televise this event (Sandberg's funeral?). I've reached out to Marquee for information and will update this post with info if and when it's available."

A Hall of Fame Career in Baseball History

Sandberg played 16 seasons in the MLB, with 15 of them on the north side. He was a 10-time All-Star, 9-time Gold Glove winner, and won the National League MVP in 1984. Ryno was enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 2005.
