Summer weekends are made for road trips, and if you're looking for a fun place to grab some cheap drinks and enjoy good company in southern Wisconsin, plan a stop at the Hat Rack Tap in Avalon.

Favorite Wisconsin Dive Bars

I love me a good dive bar primarily for their no-frills atmosphere, friendly locals, and usually, cheap drinks. I don't need fancy decorations, cocktails or gourmet food to have a good time, I just need a place where to be myself with interesting people to talk to.

I saw a post in the Wisconsin Dive Bars Facebook group recently that said; "Looking for dive bars to visit on a short trip from Elgin, Il to Janesville, WI this weekend". Obviously, since I live in Northern Illinois, this question caught my interest immediately.

Are there a bunch of cool dive bars just a short drive from the Rockford area that I have been missing out on? Turns out, the answer is yes!

While looking through the comments on the post I saw several people mention a place called Hat Rack, so I looked it up, and yup... this place has "dive bar" written all over it, (which I think is a very good thing!)

Hat Rack Tap is about a 30 minute drive from the Rockford area, so if you accidently enjoy too many cheap drinks, the Uber fee to get home shouldn't be too terrible.

we have a happy hour 5 - 7 pm Mon thru Thurs...2 for 1 UV drinks on Thursday nite,, Free chicken wings on Sunday 8 - 12 with raffles

Yes please, count me in! This sign also makes me feel like I will really love the vibe at Hat Rack Tap...

Hat Rack Tap doesn't post to social media very often, but other people do, and apparently, this dive bar offers some special nuts you need to be aware of...LOL!
