Did Katy Perry Diss Britney Spears on the Grammys Red Carpet?
Katy Perry said a thing on the red carpet at the 2017 Grammy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 12) that upset a lot of Britney Spears fans. Actually, she said it more than once.
While Ryan Seacrest was interviewing the Prism pop princess for E!, he commented on Katy's absence from the music scene up until returning with her newest single, "Chained To The Rhythm," last week.
Her response was simple: "That's called taking care of my mental health."
And then, the kicker: "I haven't shaved my head yet!"
In fact, she delivered the 'joke' twice. On CBS, when complimented on her newly blonde locks, she went in further: "It's like the last color in the spectrum that I can do. I've done all of them. The only thing left to do is, like, shave my head, which I'm really saving for a public breakdown."
Get it? It's her new shtick. Like, LMAO, mental illness!
Granted, she didn't explicitly mention Britney. But, come on, let's be real: Brit's well-documented, highly photographed struggle with mental illness during the overly invasive paparazzi era of the mid-to-late '00s resulted in a now infamous head-shaving moment in 2007, becoming the butt of myriad jokes and Tumblr memes ever since. (You'll no doubt remember the free-for-all fun that the tabloids had at her expense at the time.)
Almost certainly, it was a reference to Britney — and, for many fans, an incredibly insensitive one.
Then again, it wouldn't be the first time Katy Perry, singer of a song that is literally called "Ur So Gay" and premiere cultural appropriator-turned-Purposeful Pop purveyor, said or did something insensitive. Surely it won't be the last.
But at least she's #woke now, right?
As usual, Chris Crocker, who shot to Internet superstardom for defending Britney Spears against this same kind of rudeness from the general public one decade ago, says it best.
