September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. If you are not aware of what this is, check out this report from PR Newswire.

Alopeica affects almost 7 million people in America alone. A person's immune system attacks the hair follicles and can cause hair loss. This occurs on the scalp, even the body or face. Genetics can play a part in this, and can happen with men and women. There are different forms of this type of Alopecia:

  • Alopecia Areata: Round patches of hair loss
  • Alopecia Totalis: Complete loss of scalp hair
  • Alopecia Universalis: Total loss of hair on the scalp and body
  • Ophiasis: A wave pattern around the edge of the scalp

For some the regrowth of this hair loss is unpredictable, others can see a change in months. Like any condition everyone's situation is different. Some might benefit from different types of therapy, while others learn to basically live with the results from it.
