There's a reason why so many cross the bridge into Missouri to fill up their gas tanks. That's why it's not exactly news that Illinois has high gas taxes, but a new ranking shows just how high they are compared to the rest of America.

So here's the great news as we head into a holiday weekend where more Illinoisans will be driving somewhere than we have in a decade: The new gas taxes kick in today.

Rockford area gas prices are currently hovering around $2.19 per gallon, which is 5 cents lower than last week when gas prices only dropped about a penny.

For the 5th straight week, the national average price of gasoline has risen, posting a gain of 0.7 cents over the last week to $1.97 per gallon. Here in Rockford, it's different.

One of the few upsides to this whole COVID-19 mess has been lower prices at the pump week after week. Now, gas prices are on the uptick.

According to AAA-Chicago, the nationwide average for a gallon of gasoline reached $1.80 on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, a democratic lawmaker from Chicago area has proposed legislation that would ban leaf blowers and wants to fine you $500.00 if you are caught using one in Illinois.

Cops were called, the station was shut down, but not before a bunch of people made off with some seriously under-priced gasoline.

Gas Buddy says in the past month here in Rockford, gas prices have fallen over 30 cents per gallon.
