Stephen Merrill loved comics. So when he died suddenly the family decided to cite an "uppercut from Batman" as the cause.

That's not really how Merrill died, but the family was told they needed to provide a cause of death for the family's local newspaper.

However, his death was surprise and the results for his cause of death were not yet determined.

So the family opted for the "uppercut from Batman."

The family also thought it would've been a cause of death that Merrill himself would appreciate.

Originally the newspaper said "no" to the Batman obituary, thinking it was a joke.

After the family had met with the newspaper folks face to face about the obituary, they decided to run it as is.

According to 10 News in Tampa, "he would have been honored to have died by an uppercut from Batman," said Merrill's fiancee, Stephanie Vella.
