Lifetime's "Unauthorized Saved By The Bell" movie premiered last night and it was terrible. But I loved it anyway.

The plot of the "Saved By The Bell" movie was based on a book by Dustin Diamond (Screech Powers), so the movie was also in his point of view. Pretty sure everyone who is a Saved By The Bell fan would've chosen any other actor's POV, but we'll take it.

We all could've predicted the movie was going to be terrible, but I kind of loved it anyway, and here's why.

  1. The movie started with a look at the original TV show, "Good Morning Miss Bliss!" Us die-hard fans watched that too (even if I was only three years old...) and we got the cheesy interaction of Miss Bliss and Mr. Belding. If only for a few seconds, it was wonderful. I wish Mikey and Nicki would've been in the movie, too.
  2. Lisa Turtle's hair didn't change the entire movie. Not once did she take that ponytail out. I don't know why I loved this, but I did.
  3. The "I'm So Excited!" Jessie scene was in the movie! I mean, I figured it would be, because it is THE most memorable scene of the entire series, but there's always a chance that the TV-movie people could leave it out. But they didn't, and I might save it on my DVR forever because of this.
  4. The movie showed Mark Paul Gosselaar dying his hair every day. I knew this, but I never really thought about it until they showed the scene. We all still love you, Zack Morris, even if you have brown hair.
  5. A.C. Slater's pants. And tank tops. In fact, one of the reasons you need to watch this movie is the wardrobe. Can we have another 80s prom now?
  6. The explanation of Kelly and Jessie leaving and Tori coming in! How many kids were watching "Saved By The Bell" confused as all can be in 1992/1993? Where is Kelly? Who is Tori? Wait, where is Tori? How did Kelly come back so fast? Who is dating who?!?!?!?! Take a deep breath everyone. It has been addressed, you weren't going nuts.
  7. The soundtrack. When you get Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" AND "Baby Got Back" in one movie, it's worth watching even if Zack Morris is about 6 inches too short.

Other fun things included hearing Dustin Diamond talk about his first kiss with Tori Spelling, and the casting directors not choosing Jennie Garth to play Kelly. The entire casting process and producer meetings were actually pretty interesting.

Now I did have a bunch of reasons why I didn't like the movie, including Zack and Slater calling people d**bags twice. Did that word exist in the 90s?

We definitely didn't get enough Mr. Belding or Kelly, and I'm sure every viewer can agree with me that we wanted less Screech. Lisa was a little strange, too.

Maybe, just maybe, one of the other actors will speak out against it and we'll get another one! In my dreams, I know. I'll settle for an extended mini series. Or an early Christmas present of every "Saved By The Bell" season on DVD.
