The Debate Surrounding Flock Safety Cameras

You might be driving past or walking by these cameras every day and not even noticing them.

It's been a hot-button issue here recently; Flock Safety cameras have been in the news.

Proponents of Flock Safety cameras say they are useful for law enforcement to solve and deter crimes. The real-time data and searchable vehicle characteristics can apparently speed up police investigations.

Those against Flock cameras say it enables continuous and warrantless tracking of innocent people just going about their daily lives.

How the DeFlock App Tracks Surveillance

Now there's a way for you to keep an eye on the cameras that are watching you.

The DeFlock app is a crowdsourced map pinpointing where every Flock camera is based on zip, city, or address. It's probably not perfect considering cameras could be missing, moved, or misidentified, but I still found it to be a pretty interesting tool.

How Many Cameras Are Scanned on Your Drive?

You can also use the map to check your commute, for example. On my daily drive into the radio station, on what DeFlock would call a "direct route," six different cameras will scan my plates. Kinda crazy.

I also dropped in the zip code, 61107, and found that there are 30 different cameras in that area. For 61103, I found 40, and 61102 came up with 11.
