Rockford-area education leaders and officials from Golden apple will host a roundtable discussion in Loves Park on Wednesday to discuss the state's teacher shortage crisis.

Golden Apple will launch an "accelerator" program to help place qualified teachers in areas of need. The new teacher residency and licensure program will recruit college seniors and people who have bachelor's degrees in non-teaching capacities and prepare them to teach in high-need areas, according to a news release.

The program will put the recruits in a yearlong residency in a school district, focusing on areas such as STEM, special education and bilingual education.

Education leaders will discuss the teacher shortage crisis and the impact it has on students and families.
