Illinois Residents Warned About New USPS Delivery Text Scam

If you've received a text message claiming a USPS package couldn't be delivered because a signature was required, you're not alone.

A new scam is making the rounds, and the message looks convincing enough to fool people who are expecting a package.

Illinois Residents Warned About New USPS Delivery Text Scam

The text claims that a delivery attempt was made and that the package could not be released because nobody was available to sign for it.  It then says the shipment is being held at a local USPS facility and urges recipients to arrange redelivery or pickup within 24 hours.  A link is provided, along with instructions to reply "Y" and reopen the message if the link doesn't work.

There are several red flags here.  First, the message comes from an unknown international phone number rather than an official USPS contact.  Second, the web address included in the text is not a legitimate USPS website.  Scammers often use fake websites that closely resemble official pages in an attempt to steal personal information, passwords, or even payment details.

The message also creates a false sense of urgency by warning that the package could be returned to the sender if action isn't taken by a specific date.  This pressure tactic is commonly used in phishing scams to get people to act before they have time to think.

If you receive a text like this, like I did, do not click the link.  Do not reply to the message.  Do not provide any personal information.  Instead, delete the text and verify any package status directly through the official USPS website or tracking tools.
