Illinois residents who struggle with asthma could see relief soon in affording their lifesaving tool: an asthma inhaler.

Growing up, I had really bad asthma.  I carried an inhaler with me wherever I went and had to use it frequently.  As I got older, I grew out of asthma somehow and I'm so grateful I don't have to fork over extra money for inhalers every month.

Luckily, an Illinois State Senator is hoping to make asthma inhalers way more affordable for residents.

Hunter (D-Chicago) emphasized the importance of ensuring medication affordability, stating, “No one should struggle to afford their medication while big companies profit.” She noted that even though current insurance plans cover some asthma treatment expenses, there's room for improvement in removing barriers for individuals managing this condition long-term.

The expense for a 30-day supply of inhalers for those with health insurance would be capped at $25, thanks to the Senate Bill 3203. That means insurance providers would be prohibited from restricting coverage for prescription inhalers starting January 1, 2026!

It's crazy to think some asthma patients pay out-of-pocket costs ranging anywhere from $180 to $300 per month on inhalers.  Hopefully, the proposed legislation will alleviate that financial burden on patients across Illinois.

Senate Bill 3203 now moves to the House for further review.
