A stranger legal situation involving AI is playing out in federal court after a life insurance company claimed an Illinois woman relied on ChatGPT so heavily that she ended up firing her human attorney.

According to the lawsuit filed by the insurance company, the situation all started with a long-term disability case that had already been settled.  The company says it reached an agreement with Illinois resident, Graciela Dela Torre, about two years ago.  As part of the settlement, she signed a full legal release, and the case was dismissed "with prejudice", which means it cannot be brought back to court again.

Well, last year the woman reportedly tried to reopen the case.

The lawsuit claimed her attorney explained that the settlement was final and could not be undone.  Instead of dropping the whole situation, she then filed those documents pro se, which means she represented herself without a lawyer.  A judge ultimately denied the request to reopen the case.

It doesn't end there.  Nope.

After the ruling, the insurance company said the woman filed a brand-new case and began submitting dozens of filings to the court, many of which were allegedly generated with ChatGPT's assistance.  The insurance company claimed that responding to the wave of filings cost them nearly $300,000 in legal expenses, which is part of why they are now pursuing the lawsuit.

Legal observers say the situation highlights a growing challenge in the legal world as AI tools become more widely accessible and advanced.  AI can obviously generate answers quickly, but that doesn't mean those answers are always correct or legally sound.  And as this unusual case shows, relying on it too heavily can lead to some very expensive consequences.
